Washington College’s Sailing Season Preview

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — After an outstanding collegiate sailing career at St. Mary’s College, first-year Washington College head sailing coach Bradley Adam takes on the new challenge of bringing the program back to competing at a high level within the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA).

Adam takes over a relatively young team with just one senior and three juniors on the roster. The lone senior is skipper Paul Hart (Cape May Court House, N.J./St. Augustine Prep). Hart spent most of last season as the team’s top skipper and was named Shoreman of the Week after a strong performance at the Riley Cup.

Junior skipper Will Sunkler (Elkton, Md./Kent County) picked up a Shoreman of the Week honor of his own last spring and was named the team’s Most Improved two seasons ago. Junior skipper Andrew Vernon (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) helped lead the team to a win at last fall’s Colony Cup, while classmate and crew Ellie Lienert (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) is back for her third season after sailing in six regattas a year ago.

Sophomore skipper Henry Proud (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) was Washington’s B Division skipper in the team’s Colony Cup victory, finishing first in that division. Sophomores Haber Carlson (Severna Park, Md./Indian Creek School) and Andrew Houghton (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) each saw time at both skipper and crew as freshmen. Carlson was Vernon’s crew in B Division at the Colony Cup. Sophomore crews Lindsay Fullerton (Elkins Park, Pa./Abington), Jessie Ngo (Pinellas Park, Fla./Palm Harbor University High School), and Haley Wilt (Largo, Fla./Seminole) each saw limited action in regattas as freshmen.

Freshman crew Evan McCarthy (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) joins the team this fall after serving as a team captain in high school.

Adam is joined on the staff by third-year assistant coach Evan Clayton and recruitment coordinator Tom Pierson. The team will open its fall season at the Edward Teach Memorial Open at Hampton University this Saturday and Sunday. In the team’s lone home regatta of the fall, Washington will host the Central Late Fall October 20th and 21st. Washington will be looking to qualify for the War Memorial – the MAISA Fall Co-Ed Dinghy Championships – for the first time in three years.
