Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company
On Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 1:15 pm, the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company, along with the Kent & Queen Annes Rescue Squad, Kent County EMS and other mutual aid organizations, was dispatched to a “Large Structure Fire” in the 23700 block of Lovely Lane. This is located in the Broad Neck area of Kent County, Maryland.
Units arrived to find an approximate 30′ x 50′ pole barn on the ground and burning. In order to extinguish the fire, two (2) 1-3/4″ hose lines were deployed from Chestertown’s first engine. One was handled by Chestertown members. The other line was handled by Rock Hall VFC personnel. In order to bring an adequate supply of water to the incident, a long supply hose, in excess of one thousand (1000′) feet was placed up the lane from the public road. Extensive labor was needed to remove the roofing tin from the confines of the structure. The tin covered hot spots and impeded mopping up operations. The incident was placed “Under Control” at 2:32 pm.
When the incident was initially dispatched, it was reported there were injuries involved. The very first unit to arrive was a paramedic unit from the K&QA Rescue Squad. They encountered a civilian with serious burn injuries. The patient was placed in the ambulance, which was then moved out to Broad Neck Road. Lovely Lane is a dead-end road. The ambulance moved out of the way to make room for incoming fire equipment.
After further evaluation of the patient, transfer to a burn center was deemed necessary. Subsequently, the patient was transferred by Maryland State Police Aviation to the Johns Hopkins Bayview Burn Center in Baltimore City, Maryland. The condition of the patient is not known at this time.
The Maryland State Fire Marshals Office was notified. They responded to the scene and are conducting an Origin & Cause investigation.
Units operated at this incident for just over three and a half (3-1/2) hours. There were no injuries to emergency personnel. The burn patient was the only civilian injury.
We would like to thank the following fire service organizations for either assisting at the scene or providing fill-in / stand by coverage at various fire stations….
