CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Senior Maddie Bennett (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) and junior Rachel Butler (York, Pa./Central York) have been named captains of the Washington College softball team for the 2019 season by head coach Lacey Lister. Bennett and Butler are also among four student-athletes named to the team’s Leadership Council.
Bennett and Butler will be serving as captains for the first time.
Bennett, a pitcher, went 3-2 with a 3.15 ERA in 46.2 innings last year as she struck out 42 hitters. At the plate, she hit .304 in 56 at-bats with nine RBI and three doubles. She has 230 career strikeouts and is just five hits away from reaching 100 for her career.
Butler, who is a pitcher and also plays in the outfield and at first base, went 5-6 in the circle last fall with 46 strikeouts in 59.1 innings. At the plate, she hit .250 with three home runs, which tied for the team lead, and drove in 18 runs.
Joining Bennett and Butler on the Leadership Council are sophomore outfielder Grace Moery (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) and freshman pitcher Cassidy Predale (Howell, N.J./Howell). In her freshman season in 2018, Moery scored a team-high 22 runs and was second on the squad with 11 walks and seven sacrifice bunts. Predale comes to Washington College after becoming the career record holder for wins for a softball pitcher at Howell High School in New Jersey.
