Kent School Honors Founder’s Day

October 27, 2020 marks the 53rd Anniversary of Kent School’s Founder’s Day. On this day in 1967, the Kent School Association, a group of citizens who believed in academic excellence and educational choice – and who first met in June of 1967 to discuss creating a school – gathered to learn that Kent School had received its Certificate of Incorporation. The meeting that followed was a busy one – the founding Board of Directors and Officers was elected, a founding Headmistress was appointed, and they began their year-long work to open an independent school of academic rigor in a nurturing environment on the bank of the Chester River in historic Chestertown, Maryland.

Nancy Mugele, Head of Kent School said, “This year has been unlike any other in Kent School’s history. But even in these unprecedented times, it’s important to honor the traditions that make Kent School such a wonderful learning environment. Honoring Founder’s Day each year reminds us how connected we are to the legacy of our Founding Board of Directors and Officers.” Mugele continued, “We are all connected in some way or another, and thus I have chosen CONNECT as my word for this, my fifth, academic year to hold before our community in this seemingly disconnected time. It seems especially important in this complicated time that we stay connected in meaningful ways.”

Kent School is especially grateful to Founding Board President, the late Ben P. Gale and Founding Headmistress, the late Joan C. Merriken for their tenacity, resilience and perseverance in leading this institution. Kent School sets high academic and personal standards; by having a devoted and highly skilled faculty; and by actively living our community values of integrity, respect, responsibility and friendship. We honor the diverse backgrounds and special talents of our students and strive to maintain a strong school-home collaboration and a safe, warm environment.

The best schools – Kent School included – balance achievements and progress in ways that fully embrace their history, while also embracing the opportunities that exist in our diverse world. The power of our spirit, our community connections, and the balance of tradition and innovation, will propel us steadfastly into our next half century.

Kent School welcomed all students to campus for the 2020 – 2021 Academic Year on September 8th. Kent School has taken extensive steps to improve health and safety conditions on campus, for both students and employees. Working in partnership with the Kent County Health Department and our school community along with the extensive mitigation measures put into place, Kent School was able to safely open its campus. The school community remains vigilant in practicing health and safety protocols which coupled with Kent School’s small class sizes, large classrooms, and ample outdoor teaching spaces allow us to continue in-person, on-campus instruction.

Kent School, located on the bank of the Chester River in historic Chestertown, MD, is an independent day school serving children from Preschool through Grade Eight. Kent School’s mission is to guide students in realizing their potential for academic, artistic, athletic, and moral excellence.
