“Crossing our fingers that Covid will recede, we are moving ahead with our search for a new Executive Director to re-invigorate our programs and broadened our reach into the wide and ever-evolving history of our county,” said Society President Barbara Jorgenson.
“Our Board of Directors views the Society as a catalyst for opportunities to improve our community through history-based projects,” said Jorgenson. “We are looking for a dynamic individual to affect that vision and inspire and lead the Society’s staff, members, and volunteers to develop innovative—even fun—ways to show the relevance of our local history to today’s world.”
The Executive Director will be responsible for managing the Society’s operations, Bordley History Center headquarters, staff, volunteers, and programs. The Executive Director will work closely with the 16-member Society Board of Directors and the several Society committees.
Special qualifications include:

- Experience with data base management such as Past Perfect;
- Experience in a museum, historical society, or non-profit setting;
- Experience in fundraising, including grants;
- Experience with social media and virtual programming;
- Demonstrated rapport and understanding of the broad Kent Countycommunity;
- Tech-savviness and ability to use modern technology to manage theorganization and communicate about its work;
- Excellent writing skills;
- College degree in history or related topic.

The Historical Society is marking its 85th year, having been founded in 1936 by a group of local citizens dedicated to collecting and sharing the stories of our county. It is headquartered at the Bordley History Center, located in the heart of downtown Chestertown at 301 High Street. The Center houses the Society’s museum, gift shop, research library, and administrative offices. Although the museum’s hours are limited due to Covid, its window exhibits at the corner of High and Cross Streets are always open.
