Kiersten Rose – Shorewoman of the Week
Freshman women’s basketball player Kiersten Rose (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr.) is this week’s Shorewoman of the Week. Rose netted a double-double in her collegiate debut in a 20-point win over Notre Dame (Md.) on Saturday.
Rose pulled down a game-best 15 rebounds and added 11 points for her double-double in the Shorewomen’s 71-51 victory. Nine of her 15 boards came on the offensive end and helped the team score 16 second chance points.
This is Rose’s first career Shorewoman of the Week honor.
Shoremen Soccer – Shoreman of the Week
The entire Washington College men’s soccer team shares this week’s Shoreman of the Week honor. The Shoremen won their first-ever Centennial Conference Championship yesterday, and earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1973, with a 2-0 win over Gettysburg.
The Shoremen enteted the Centennial Conference Tournament as the two-seed. On Friday night in a semifinal against third-seeded Franklin & Marshall, Washington won in overtime, 1-0, on a goal by Eric Gwadz 2:03 into the extra session on an assist from Greg Adams. On Sunday afternoon, the Shoremen won their first conference title as a member of the Centennial in a 2-0 victory over fifth-seeded Gettysburg at Johns Hopkins. James Strine scored the winner in the seventh minute from Gwadz and in the second half with 16:02 left, Gwadz provided the insurance goal to make it a two-goal contest. Joe Mutschller preserved the 1-0 lead with a team save in the 55th minute. It was the team’s first conference title since sharing the Middle Atlantic Conference title in 1969 and first outright conference championship since winning the Mason-Dixon Conference in 1964. The defense posted a pair of shutouts en route to winning the championship.
