CHESTERTOWN, MD
American Bankers Association has selected Scott Sturgill, CEO & President of The Peoples Bank, to serve on ABA’s Community Bankers Council.
Sturgill attended the ABA Community Bankers Council meeting in Washington, November 13-15, 2023.
Bankers had discussions on legislative priorities including the ACRE Act, Credit Card Competition Act and SAFER Banking Act; and regulatory issues, including Section 1033 of the Dodd-Frank act, debit card interchange fees and the Administration’s executive order on artificial intelligence. Council members also had a chance to share ways high interest rates have affected the business of banking, and exchange ideas on deposit generation, loan growth, talent recruitment and retention, and other business and operational best practices.
“Community banks play such an important role in our banking industry,” Sturgill said. “This appointment gives me the opportunity to represent Maryland and advocate for the continued success of America’s hometown banks.” ABA’s Community Bankers Council, which meets twice a year, is made up of approximately 100 bankers from across the country from institutions with generally less than $5 billion in assets. Members are appointed by the ABA chair. Sturgill is the sole representative for the state of Maryland appointed to the council.
Sturgill was named President and CEO of The Peoples Bank in 2021 after 35 years of service in the community banking industry. With seven branches spread throughout Kent, Queen Anne’s and Talbot Counties, The Peoples Bank opened its doors in 1910, and has provided local communities with 113 years of excellent customer service and quality financial products.
