Kent County Public Library is thrilled to kick off its Cultivating Community programming series with “Planting Ahead: Welcome Spring with Beautiful Flowers!” on Monday, November 11 and “Landscape Engineering for Conservation” on Saturday, December 7.
The grant-funded Cultivating Community initiative is designed to empower and engage community members through hands-on gardening experiences and education. Events in this series will feature local experts as presenters and incorporate giveaways that support gardening in a variety of ways.
Planting Ahead: Welcome Spring with Beautiful Flowers!

Join us to learn how to create beautiful early spring flower gardens using fall-planted bulbs. University of Maryland educator Ginny Rosenkranz, who delights in how spring flowering bulbs and corms bring color and texture into the garden, will offer guidance on which bulbs and corms will give you years of color, the easiest ways to plant bulbs, and tips for identifying the best sites in your garden for planting bulbs.
Program attendees will receive an assortment of free bulbs to plant in their gardens! A limited number of free books on gardening with bulbs will also be available.
Landscape Engineering for Conservation

What does conservation and strong stewardship of the land look like on Maryland’s Eastern Shore? Whether you have a farm or a home garden, landscape architect and conservation planner Robin Hanway has answers for you!
From drainage and water storage to reasons why you should let your garden be messy, this program will give you a quick overview of the principles of soil health, planting practices that support conservation, and the benefits of incorporating native plants into your outside space.
A limited number of free books on landscaping practices will be given away at this event.
The Cultivating Community series will continue through April 2025. Additional events will be announced over the coming months.
