WKHS Opens November Fundraising Drive

It was a little different when WKHS, Kent County High School Radio Station, began their student broadcast day on November 15th. It was the opening minutes of their November Fundraising Week as well as the first day for the Sophomore Class to be on the air. The station which began broadcasting in March 1974 will celebrate its 50th Anniversary a few month before this class graduates in 2024.

Founded by the Kent County Public School System, WKHS 90.5FM, is one of the most powerful high school stations in the country. At 17,500 watts with flat terrain all around, the signal can be heard for up to 60 miles in any direction.

During the School Day the students in broadcast classes run the station. In a time when many educational stations are being scuttled to divert funding elsewhere, Kent County Public Schools are proud to continue the program to train the students for a possible career in broadcasting. Regardless of whether they continue in broadcasting, the experience they receive will benefit them throughout their lives learning communications skills and a professional work ethic.

Broadcasting from the Campus of Kent County High School.

Most evenings the station has volunteers from the community with music programs from a number of different decades and genres. When the students and volunteers are off the air the station simulcasts WXPN radio from the University of Pennsylvania.

Tune in November 15-19 for the Fall Membership Drive. During the drive guests from the Kent County Community will be interviewed by the students. I was their first guest for this drive.
