On Monday, February 25, 2019 forty-four (44) Kent County High School students became the first inductees into the KCHS Minority Scholars Program (MSP).
Mary Jones and Michelle Phillips is the advisors of the program. During the ceremony Ronnell Page and James Christy shared motivating speeches and KCHS alumni, Sherissa Jeffers sang ” I Believe I Can Fly.”
The Minority Scholars Program is a student led, student based, and student driven program, aimed at closing the achievement gap. There four key initiatives employed throughout all members school programs: community outreach, peer to peer tutoring/mentoring programs, college visits, and a speaker series.
The program began at Walter Johnson High School in Montgomery County, Maryland in 2005, as an effort to address the lack of minority students in rigorous classes and extracurricular activities. There are 23 Montgomery County Schools that has programs. Kent County High may be the only one outside of Montgomery County.
Michelle Phillips believes that this is the first time that a school with a Minority Scholars Program held an induction ceremony.
