University of Maryland Shore Regional Health Offers Lung Cancer Screening in November

EASTON, MD

A free lung cancer screening event will take place at the University of Maryland Shore Regional Health (UM SRH) Diagnostic and Imaging Center on Saturday, November 14, 2026, 8:30 – 11:45 a.m. UM SRH is a member organization of the University of Maryland Medical System.

The screening is a joint initiative of UM Shore Medical Group – Pulmonary Care and the Cancer Center at UM SRH. It is open to men and women between the ages of 50 and 80 who are either current smokers or past smokers who quit within the past 15 years, and whose smoking history is equivalent to a pack per day for 20 years. They also must have no signs or symptoms of lung cancer. According to the U. S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. and cigarette smoking is responsible for 80% to 90% of all lung cancer cases. People who smoke are 15 to 30 times more likely to develop lung cancer compared to non-smokers.

The Lung Cancer Screening Program uses low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scanning to find disease before symptoms begin, when the disease is at its earliest and most treatable stage. LDCT technology – which is more detailed than chest x-rays – produces multiple, cross-sectional images of the lungs, using less radiation than a standard CT scan.

Individuals interested in undergoing the lung cancer screening are first scheduled for an informational appointment with a UM SMG-Pulmonary Care nurse practitioner. This appointment may take place in person (at UM SMG-Pulmonary Care locations in either Easton or Denton) or via telehealth. After this appointment, the screening is scheduled.

“We are please to offer this important screening on November 14th, which is Shine a Light on Lung Cancer Day,” said Melissa Eigenbrode, CRNP, UM SMG-Pulmonary Care. “It’s a great opportunity for smokers and former smokers to get an understanding of their pulmonary health.”
